Orphanages were places of either loss or abandonment, and a hero’s job was to act as a beacon to the lost and abandoned – at least, that was the ideal. Heroes were human too, and everyone knew that humans faltered; Sarah most of all. And whenever she visited a place of abandonment, that knowledge burned inside her. [break] Sarah’s bright blue eyes scanned the orphanage. Some of these people had lost their parents, of course, and that was a tragedy too, but it wasn’t one that quite resonated. But some of them – most of them, even – had been abandoned out of fear. Fear for life, fear for money, fear for future careers…each case was different. But whatever the reasons were, the message was the same. [break] You aren’t wanted. [break] And Sarah could rescue people from many things, but she couldn’t rescue anyone from that message, or the pain that followed. She could assuage it, maybe even help them forget about it temporarily, but when it was time for everyone to go home…well, you couldn’t punch a nagging thought away. [break] It wasn’t that he’d left them, really – it was that he’d never been there for them to begin with. [break] Sarah blinked twice. Moisture in her eye; the lights were too bright, perhaps, or the colors too gaudy. Wiping an oncoming tear from her face, she forced a smile and turned around.
[attr="class","mary5"]Dreams were what made humanity get to the point they were at now. People with enough ambition and smarts, or just plain crazy, trying something never done before. It was what brought humanity forward, providing people with a reason to look forward to the next day, and the reason anyone did anything.
At least, that’s what Khae thought.
Which was why events like these were so important. Orphanages were, in principle, a lovely thing; taking in a child with no parents due to an unfortunate event. However, all too often, they were where dreams went to die. Without the fostering of young minds, what hope did the future have?
Tolerating high-life toadies aside, Khae was actually having a fair bit of fun interacting with the littles ones! The mere mention of heroing left them bright-eyed and full of glee, and Khae was more than happy to regale them with her tales. Some of them were of herself, others of figures who inspired her, but all of them were told in a way to inspire them. Make them think about what they themselves could do, both for themselves and for society at large.
She could only hope the message stuck.
And the effect of being orphaned stuck around for well after childhood. Khae herself knew this… and it seemed another felt it as well. The blonde lady, equal parts tough and elegant, was one of them. Though Khae was far from an academic, she understood people better than most, attuned to emotion as she was. She couldn’t mistake that mournful look.
Especially not when she had worn it herself.
Breaking away from the kids for the time being, Khae would wait for the opportunity to catch her away from all the other people, placing herself in a way that the two would happen upon one another.
Khae looked Sarah in the eye, and though the hero known as Mara was known for being brash, cocky, and generally unreasonable. Her eyes, however, reflected only empathy and understanding.
“Some things cut close to the bone, hmm?” She spoke in a slightly posh English accent that couldn’t truly be placed anywhere, alluding to her education and upbringing.
It didn’t take long for Sarah’s coworker to attempt to empathize with her. Sarah’s situation wasn’t exactly a secret – it had been well-publicized in those horrible papers, and everyone in Aegis who’d heard of her knew about it. She only wished that the reverse was true, but as it were, she was drawing a blank on Khae. [break] Still, the empathy was not…unwelcome. But she had an image to maintain. Never show weakness, or they’ll gobble you up. [break] “Yes,” Sarah said quietly, attempting not to alert anyone else. “It’s hard to see so many of these children here. We do what we can, but it’d be a lie to call it anything other than emotionally taxing.”
