Elena's eyes narrowed when two of them drew weapons; one wielding a plasma pistol of some kind and another with a pair of gauntlets. Nothing she couldn't handle, so long as these thugs didn't suddenly start busting out with a bunch of superpowers on top of everything else they were throwing at her. Then she might actually be in trouble.
"Shit..."
When the one with the gun started opening fire, she did indeed take cover, not having much of a choice in the matter. But she was hardly unprepared for what was about to come next. As the man with the gauntlets came rushing at her, she quickly swapped he pistol out for her taser, and waited for him to make the first move.
He swings wide, which she easily ducks under, and strikes with a heavy open-palm strike from below to his jaw, stunning him. This gives her just enough time to hit him with the taser. The gauntlet-wearing man lets out a cry of pain as a potent-but-nonlethal surge of electricity courses through his body, before passing out. This caused the one with the gun to react in shock; given that Elena wasn't exactly a paragon of physical prowess, he was no doubt shocked to see her so easily take down her much larger opponent. Elena, ever focused, took the chance to capitalize on his shock, dropping her taser and once again drawing her pistol.
She took aim at the man with the gun, or, more specifically, his hands, and pulled the trigger. Aiming to hit either his one of his hands or the gun he was holding, she hoped to disarm him before he could recover and start firing again. Whether she succeeded or not in doing so, one thing was becoming clear, though; this wasn't just some "little lady" like the thugs seemed to assume. She was used to dealing with this sort of thing, and she was certainly a lot more capable than she looked.
"I won't warn you a third time. Hands up where I can see them."
She glanced to the side, where she noticed that the electrical device keeping Kyoko in place seemed to be malfunctioning, then shut down completely. Did the tanuki do that? Or was it just faulty equipment? All she knew was that none of the thugs seemed to notice it, since they were mostly focused on her. She wouldn't say anything for now; if this girl was capable of fighting, she certainly wouldn't mind having a helping hand in dealing with these thugs. And if not, the least she could do was buy her some time to escape and get away.
Meanwhile, Elena was in the middle of a patrol at around the same time that the abduction took place, though she happened to be not far away. As she was walking by, some concerned citizens approached her, stating that they heard some strange noises coming from a nearby alley, but were too afraid to check it out for themselves on the off chance that it might be some sort of villain attack or something. Elena frowned. She would have liked something more to go on, but they honestly weren't able to give her much more information than what they'd already given. It would have to do for now. Hopefully, their fears would be unfounded, but it wasn't exactly like she could ignore something like this.
Either way, she went on to move down the alley, going slowly as not to alert anyone that she might be coming. What she found further in was a bit more than she was bargaining for. A group of masked men, all dressed in black, surrounding what appeared to be a teenage girl with animal-like features who was trapped in some sort of electrified net.
"Haiyaa..." Elena muttered under her breath.
It went without saying that she has stumbled on quite the crime in progress. Hiding from view, she spoke into her communicator, giving a terse request for backup in the hopes that more officers would be here soon. Then, she decided to make her presence known. Pulling her pistol out of its holster, she stepped in front of the group and began shouting at the men while pointing her gun towards them, her grip firm and steady.
"Freeze! Hands where I can see them!"
Notably, she had not noticed the shrunken Charlotte anywhere near where Kyoko was pinned to the ground by the net-like device. She was more focused on the men. She couldn't tell right away if they were armed, though she had a feeling they might be. Either way, she was fully expecting for them to fight back, and was ready for them to do just that. She was making extra sure to keep an eye on the men closest to the Tanuki girl; she'll be damned if she let them try to use her as a hostage.
I am Detective Elena Shi, of the WCPD, and I am in need of your expertise. At whatever time is most convenient for you, I'd like to meet you at Washington Park and discuss this issue. You may rest assured that you are not personally under any suspicion, but I can't say any more until we meet. Regardless, all I can say is that this is urgent."
This was the rather straight-to-the-point message that Elena had sent to one Sun-hi Lee, aka Nexus Buster. During what was supposed to be a simple bust of some seemingly-average bank robbers turned out to be a rather dire situation. None of the robbers had any powers as far as anyone could tell, but they were armed with extremely advanced energy rifles of some kind. The kind that shoot lasers capable of burning nickel-sized holes through solid concrete walls. The saving grace is that the would-be criminals weren't able to handle how powerful these weapons actually were, and proceeded to drop most of them in favor of escaping. A lucky break, but also a bit of a mixed blessing.
Whatever tech was involved in creating these weapons, it was far beyond the understanding of anyone at the Police department, and the higher-ups didn't know where to even begin in dealing with dealing with this mess. At the very least, they wanted to know what these guns were capable of, is only to try and develop ways to counter their power. But either way, they didn't want anyone attempting to follow what few leads they had without getting a better understanding of these weapons; or at least get an idea of who made them and how. That was when Elena got the idea to seek Sun-hi's help in this matter. If anyone would know anything about this, she would.
At this point, all Elena could do was hope she'd show up and would be willing to cooperate with her. For understandable reasons, she didn't want any more weapons of this caliber roaming around the streets; otherwise, everyone's job was about to get a lot more difficult.
It wasn't often that Elena found herself with time off, given how good her job is at keeping her busy. But after finally wrapping up a particularly grueling and nasty case that she'd been working on, her higher-ups saw fit to give her a few days off to rest and recuperate from the whole ordeal; normally, she might be tempted to insist that she's just fine and could keep working, but in this instance, she wasn't going to argue with them. A few days off sounded like exactly what she needed, so she graciously accepted the offer. It almost felt strange, not having a dozen things that need to be taken care of all at once, but at the end of the day, the good detective wasn't really complaining. Besides, they'd be fine without her for at least a few days. Probably.
Either way, since it had been a while since she last got the chance to do so, she decided to stop at her father's restaurant, a charming little hole in the wall that offers a wide variety of Chinese food, both authentic and "Americanized". Since it was a slow day, she got to sit down and visit with her parents for a while, eager to catch up with them and pleased to see that business was otherwise going well. Weekdays were always a bit spotty on how many customers he got, but the weekends often made up for it and then some. Occasionally, when she had the spare time, Elena would help out by serving as a waitress, but the place was just small enough her parents were able to get by with just the two of them; her mother waiting tables and her father doing all of the cooking.
Regardless, after a pleasant four or five hours of catching up and telling fun stories about work, Elena looked at the clock and decided to call it a day and head home. Always fussing over his daughter, her father saw fit to send her home with a bag of about a dozen freshly-fried egg rolls. It was true that she really liked them; the pork and cabbage filling was to die for. But she couldn't handle this many. Needless to say, the sight of the detective walking down the sidewalk holding a grease-soaked paper bag filled with enough egg rolls to feed five or six people was quite the sight, though she was long past caring what others thought of her. That said, she was looking forward to getting home and digging in. She'll figure something out with the leftovers later.
BUILD: Elena has a slender but very well-toned body, the result of near-consertant physical training and a job that keeps her on her feet quite a bit. Though her breasts are large enough to fill a C-cup, she prefers to keep them bound while wearing her work uniform, thus making her appear flatter than she actually is.[break][break]

Personality Evaluation
[break][break]
Elena is, first and foremost, a friendly woman and compassionate police detective with a strong sense of justice; something that she inherited from her mother, who was also a policewoman. Despite not having a power that's very effective for fighting against villains, she is nonetheless determined to make the world a better place. Thus, she lets the heroes do what they do best and focuses on the normal people who try to become criminals, or those with a non-combative powers like hers. [break][break]
That said, Elena also has her fair share of hang-ups, and, while friendly and seemingly approachable, she is a bit on the socially awkward side. Because her power allows her to know when people are lying, and because very few people are 100% truthful at all times, she has trouble trusting others once they do lie to her? Was it a small and seemingly-harmless white lie? Or are they hiding something more sinister? Not knowing that answer tends to bother her more than she is willing to admit.[break][break]
In addition to the above, she can also be extremely awkward when it comes to romance. She's extremely bad at flirting, often tripping over her words if she tries. She is a lesbian, and though she doesn't go out of her way to broadcast it to the world, she doesn't actively try to hide it, either. At least, not normally. When someone she finds attractive flirts with her, she becomes a bit of an easily-flustered trainwreck, so it tends to be rather obvious to anyone watching from the outside.[break][break]
Last but not least, while she still has a very strong sense of justice, she's not some hot-blooded hero who fights to the bitter end no matter how much the odds are stacked against her. She has little trouble dealing with normal bank robbers or the random thug, so long as they either a) don't have a power of any kind, or b) their power is, like hers, useless for fighting. When it comes to villains, she'd rather avoid fighting them at all.[break][break]
If she gets backed into a corner, she'll fight then off as best she can until help arrives, but otherwise, she'll 'NOPE' away from there as soon as humanly possible and let the actual heroes do what they do best. Those fight and run away live to fight another day, as the saying goes.[break][break]

Half-American and half-Chinese, Elena was born in Wayport City to a chef from China who had moved to the city in hopes of opening up his own restaurant and a young policewoman who was making a bit of a name for herself in the local community. The two of them met when she stopped at his restaurant on the way home from a long day of work, and the two hit it off rather quickly. A few years later, they were married, and Elena was born. Even at a very young age, it didn't take anyone very long to figure out that Elena had inherited her mother's sense of justice, and, as such, very few people who knew her were surprised when, just after becoming a teen, she expressed interest in following in her mother's footsteps and becoming a police officer herself. Thus her path in life was set. [break][break]
Initially, her father was disappointed that she didn't want to become a chef like him, but once he got over that brief disappointment, both of her parents gladly supported her endeavors. At first, some openly wondered why she would choose something so much more mundane, as opposed to becoming a superhero. Admittedly, she hadn't given that idea much thought. However, once her power, which was rather unremarkable for combat but potentially very useful for her intended like, manifested itself for the first time, she took that as a sign to continue her pursuit of following in her mother's footsteps and become an officer of the law. The way she saw it, she could let the heroes deal with the super-powerful villains and focus on the small fry that don't require insane superpowers to deal with.[break][break]
Thus, throughout her teen years, she physically trained her body to be in the best shape it could be. Her mother taught her some basic martial arts that came in handy for her throughout her own career, while also offering her whatever general tips and tricks she was legally allowed to give to someone who wasn't actually a part of the force yet. The years of training paid off, as she passed her police academy training with flying colors, and reached her goal of becoming an officer at the age of 22. Over the years that followed, she did quite well for herself, as her ability to detect lies came in very useful when it came to questioning witnesses and possible suspects. Five years later, she earned herself a promotion, and became a detective. Today, two years after becoming a detective, she's still going strong. [break][break]
Only time will tell what fate has in store for the good detective, but as it stands, she's quite content with life at this moment. Even if things tend to get a little hectic what with all of the supervillain attacks and whatnot.[break][break]
A simple but effective power in which, when directly speaking to one or more individual, Elena is able to tell when any of them says something that directly contradicts what the person in question knows to be the truth; i.e., when they lie. This manifests itself as a strong vibration in the back of her neck; while not painful in any way, it is still very strong and impossible for her to not notice. Annoyingly, it does little to differentiate between a small, harmless white lie and a malicious, ill-intentioned lie. Unless it's an especially extreme one, however, it won't be triggered by exaggerations. It can also be avoided with half-truths or things that are "technically true".[break][break]
Much to Elena's chagrin, her power is constantly active, and cannot be turned on or off at will. That said, it would be overwhelming if it went off whenever anyone in a room happens to tell a lie within her earshot; especially if the room is incredibly crowded. As such, as something of a safety measure, it will only activate when she's directly speaking to someone. If someone says something to another person near her, but has spoken directly to her within the last ten minutes or so, it will also trigger. As such, it's possible for it to activate when talking to multiple people, though there's a limit to what she can handle, and she tends to bow out of conversations with more than five people.[break][break]
X - As one can probably imagine, this power isn't very useful in combat, but is great for interrogating suspects. Unfortunately, as game-breaking as it might seem, it does have its limits. First and foremost, just because she knows that someone is lying doesn't mean she'll automatically learn the context of the lie; i.e., the reason they lied, or what the truth actually is. She needs to fill those blanks on her own. Additionally, it's based entirely on the perception of those she is speaking with, rather than what is the actual truth. In other words, if they genuinely believe that what they say is the truth, even if it blatantly isn't, it won't trigger. This often comes up with culprits who are either delusional or were intentionally fed wrong information from a higher-up. Either way, it can be a pain.[break][break]
A simple sub-power with great potential, but is unfortunately too restrictive for Elena to regularly rely on. Through an extremely specific form of telepathy, she can actively force someone to truthfully answer a single question, no matter how much they would otherwise try to hide the truth. A powerful ability, to say the least, but not without its fair share of drawbacks.[break][break]
X - First and foremost, this ability will only activate in the first place if the person that Elena is speaking to has triggered her lie detection ability within the last ten minutes. Additionally, the question that she asks must be directly related to whatever the person in question lied about, meaning she can't just ask them anything at random.[break][break]
X - Another major limit is that it can only be used once on a single person. Once it is used, that person can never be affected by it again, meaning Elena has to be extremely careful about when/how she uses it.[break][break]
X - Last but not least, using it even once has a tremendous physical and mental toll on Elena herself. This usually takes the form of an intense headache. Attempting it to use it more than once in a single day is especially risky, as it can result in minor brain damage and negatively impact her short-term memory. The one saving grace is that this damage isn't permanent, and she'll usually recover within few days. Either way, it's still bad enough that Elena generally prefers to save this sub-power purely as a last resort.[break][break]

⍟ QUOTE/CATCHPHRASE:[break][break]
"Honestly, if you're gonna lie to my face, you should at least make it a good one." [break][break]
✽ MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING [break][break]
Although she doesn't necessarily adhere to one particular style of martial arts, Elena has been taught techniques of various different styles and shaped them into a personalized fighting style. It primarily focuses on grappling holds and takedowns, used primarily for catching and arresting criminals, though she also knows some quick punching and kicking techniques for whenever she ends up in a prolonged fight. All in all, it's a simple-but-effective method of fighting that allows her to hold her own in a world full of super-powerful individuals. [break][break]
✽ POLICE WEAPON TRAINING [break][break]
As part of her training, Elena has learned how to efficiently use various police-related weapons, including (but not limited to) multiple styles of firearms, batons, tasers, and riot shields. She usually only keeps a concealed pistol and a folding baton on her, only using anything heavier when dealing with an especially powerful villain (which is something she tries to avoid anyway).[break]
