if you've ever read a comic book, seen a saturday morning cartoon, or watched practically any superhero anime ever, you know that most situations tend to end up in a fight of good vs. evil (or sometimes even some kind of civil war). being an animanga superhero site, with great power is not exempt to this long-standing trope. someone is bound to fight someone, and we're pleased to tell you that here, you aren't bound by numbers. with great power follows a freeform combat system, meaning that there are no mathematical formulas or dice you need to deal with before punching someone in the face. your character tier and set capabilities of your powers and skills will act as a guideline for how well you do in a battle. There are a few important things to note: [break][break]
If players have a dispute about the going-ons and results of their combat encounters, they must take their concerns up with staff. Whatever staff decides regarding the situation is the final word on the subject.
The rule regarding metagaming, godmodding, and powerplaying is especially in effect here. Any offense will result in an immediate warning. We understand that some characters may have incredible durability, amazing healing factors, and may even be able to phase through objects, but even established characters with these traits such as Superman, Wolverine and Martian Manhunter still receive damage in battle and have even died on multiple occasions in combat. No one is invincible here.
A character cannot perform or use skills or powers that they have not either bought with acclaim or listed in their application. If your character doesn't have enhanced speed, then they shouldn't be outrunning cars, cheetahs, or people that do have said power. Stick to what you have.
[break]
tiers
of course, everyone is going to apply for a character at some point, and upon approval of that character, they will be given a tier by staff. these tiers tell how much of a threat your character may be to overall society and other characters. more information on tiers can be found here!
[break]
acclaim
acclaim is the site's official currency, used to buy items in the acclaim shop! these points are very important and play a crucial role in character progression. normally, these points are earned at a set rate of 10 acclaim per post. however, you can earn more through methods such as going on missions and events!
[break]
crisis alerts & death enabled
the world is a very dangerous place, especially with so many superhumans running around. there are minor threats such as a bank robbery or a narcotics deal, but when a character threatens society as a whole through something like starting a doomsday device (which would require a massacre ticket), a crisis alert must be started in which other characters can either attempt to help or stop whatever scheme is underway. on the other hand, staff may start these as well with events. these threads are typically death-enabled unless explicitly stated otherwise, though not all death-enabled threads have to be crisis alerts. players can start their own death-enabled threads such as one on one battles to the death between archenemies, though these threads must be tagged with [DE] in the title and must have a good reason behind them.
[break]
death
death is not the end in comic books, it's rarely the end in anime and on with great power it certainly is not the end of your story. after dying, players must wait fifteen days before finding their way back to life. how, you may ask? well, that's a matter of how creative you can get. in the world of comics, almost anything can happen, from a clone with your exact powers, a mysterious pit of healing liquid to an otherworldy regeneration matrix, characters are free to return to the living once their fifteen days are up, just propose your ideas to staff, or ask staff for some ideas if you're having trouble coming up with any yourself, or honestly, if you have any concerns about death in general as we understand that with so much variety comes an overwhelming amount of possibilities.
[break]
species
your character can be anything from a mutant to an alien to a demon, but keep in mind that species like Saiyans or Kryptonians DO NOT EXIST and we strongly advise you to stay away from making blatant copycats. we're not saying don't make your character part of a species that gives them a unique physiology, but a character from a species that's fueled by the yellow sun and gains superhuman conditioning and flight but is also vulnerable to minerals from their home planet and magic will not fly. additionally, please stay away from making flat out gods such as Zeus or Thor. Avatars of these characters (meaning a character with powers similar to Zeus through Olympian Physiology, for example) would be okay as they'd likely be a mortal blessed with incredible powers, but making flat out gods or god-level characters is a no-go. In their pure mythological forms, these characters are far too powerful for our setting and the cosmic lore in these stories can conflict and cause confusion. staff will expand on these characters themselves and the greater entities of our universe as a whole at a later date.
[break]
powers
when it comes to power and abilities, pretty much anything is possible so long as there are adequate weaknesses along with it. furthermore, all almighty, Omni, reality-warping and absolute powers are completely and utterly banned. no exceptions. also please make sure that a power you are planning to apply for isn't already taken by checking the claims thread.
as mentioned in the mechanics thread, tiers are given to players after their characters are approved and assess the level of danger that they pose to not only other people but overall society. players may go up or down in tiers with time as their characters go stronger and become more experienced. these tiers also tend to determine popularity and reliability, though this isn't nearly as locked with a set tier because there are powerful supers who suck at their job and there are powerless beings that are extremely reliable, efficient, and popular. [break]
F-Tier - a character of this tier isn't exactly much of a threat at all. they are pretty much normal humans and should be left to the local authorities if they get out of hand. nothing a beat cop can't handle, and they also tend to be the least popular or civilians.
[break]
D-Tier - these characters are certainly above average and pose more of a threat, and will definitely require another superhero/villain to combat them.
[break]
C-Tier - characters of this caliber are more of a considerable threat, and possess enough power to potentially wipe out a small town and are moderately popular and viewed as average supers.
[break]
B-Tier - here is where characters begin to reach rather insane levels of strength, b-tier characters being capable of threatening land and populations up to the size of a large mountain.
[break]
A-Tier - truly a cut above the rest, a-tier heroes are monsters among men, theorized to possess the power to destroy multiple continents at their utmost, being an international threat.
[break]
S-Tier - these are essentially the gods of our time. characters of this tier are considered dangerous enough to threaten the entire galaxy at their very best.
[break]
S+-Tier - a peak that's rarely ever reached but monstrous nonetheless. characters of this caliber can possibly destroy multiple galaxies with their full power.
Throughout your journey as a super in this world, you will earn something called Acclaim. Acclaim is the currency used to buy different items that will help progress your character and help them to become better people (whether that be for better or for worse). Below are said purchases compiled in a list with their prices and descriptions! Keep in mind that other than bases/lairs, all transactions will require IC reasoning to be completed.[break][break]
When ready to purchase, please create ONE thread per character within the Acclaim Center board to do all of your transactions in. Copy the purchasing template provided below and use it in your personal Acclaim thread.[break]
150 Acclaim
team base/lair - want your own "titans tower" where your team can call home (or their home away from home)? or perhaps your villain requires a castle where they can come up with devious plans with other cunning devils. these home turfs can be purchased for the low, low price of 150 acclaim as sub-boards within the larger "TEAM BASES" board. threads in these bases or lairs will net you a bonus of 50 acclaim to your earnings! To purchase this item properly, list these things out in your plan section:[break][break]
The link to a 300px x 100px picture of what you want for your base sub-board image.
A short description about the base (maybe some of the features, location, appearance, etc.) Descriptions for Aegis and Reign HQs are good examples.
A link to your alliance page.
[break][break]
Staff will then be more than happy to get your base set up!
250 Acclaim
minor gadget - superpowers aren’t the only thing that can aid in saving a life. Tools can be just as handy in some situations, which is where gadgets come in. in this case, these are more “mellow” gadgets. Your typical grappling hook, birdarang or batarang, smoke bombs, gas pellets, boxing glove arrow--items like these acquired after you’ve been approved with your original list of equipment would run you 250 acclaim.
500 Acclaim
minor upgrade/addition/change - nothing stays the same forever, and that includes your character. with time, they will grow both as a person and in power, learning new things about themselves and what they’re capable of. however, sometimes these changes aren’t always so drastic. has your character learned a new language? maybe they’ve lost an appendage and had it replaced with a bionic one that increases their strength but not by very much? perhaps they’ve learned to use their power to control fire a bit more. these would all count as minor upgrades/additions/changes.
major gadget - as mentioned before, superpowers aren’t the only thing that can aid in saving a life, not every hero, villain, vigilante or anti-hero even has powers, and even some of the ones that do have their own short-comings that they need to make up for. Webbing with tensile strength that rivals metal cables, explosive throwables or arrows, taser gloves, rocket boots--fun gadgets like these will run you a more hefty price at 500 acclaim.
1,500 Acclaim
major upgrade/addition/change - sometimes, growth, in a way, seems like a bit of an understatement. did your character develop an entirely new aspect of their power? have they leapt from being an absolute rookie at something to a fearsome master of it? are they now able to run at hypersonic speeds after a life-altering journey compared to their subsonic speeds before? maybe that bionic arm from earlier is now decked out in weaponry or has been upgraded to actually boost their strength massively. or perhaps their entire physiology has been altered, allowing for superhuman conditioning. these would all count as major upgrades/additions/changes that will run you 1,500 acclaim. you may only purchase one at a time with each purchase being a month apart.
variable
massacre/destruction ticket - not all villains are simple and petty thieves. Some are conniving, devilish men who just want to watch the world burn, and others are scheming visualists with their own image of a better tomorrow, and sometimes to make these dreams come true, lives must be lost. as such, players can buy an attempt to commit a massacre or cause mass destruction with good IC reasoning on why they’re doing so. the method of how this may be pulled off is up to the player. perhaps they’ve set up a doomsday device or maybe they’re using their powers to pull this off. we’re not gonna charge you to destroy a wall or kill a small group of officers or something, but large amounts of people/property such as several city blocks or hundreds or thousands of people will fall into this item. in order to make a request for it, apply like you would with any other item except add the details such as exact location, number of people/size of property you plan to attempt to destroy (in square miles or square kilometers), and after some brief math, staff will get back to you with a price fitting for your endeavors and you can begin a Crisis Alert thread for the event! now, this may sound unfair because what if you fail and lose your Crisis Alert thread? well, fret not! to ease that fear: players only have to pay the set amount if they succeed. if you lose, don’t worry about it! no charges will be held against you and you get to keep your acclaim! it’s only if you succeed that you will have to pay acclaim!
On With Great Power, there are multiple established organizations and factions that play an important role in our world. below are these roles, as some of them may differ from what you know them to be.[break]
organizations
aegis - aegis was established in 2010 by a former super-soldier named robert harrisson and a couple of other veterans you saw the second wave of supers coming. looking at how disorganized things were in their generation, this group of old men didn't wish the same disorganization on the new generation. so, aegis was born, becoming a hero association dedicated to homeland security, "homeland" meaning the entirety of earth and not just america. they monitor hotspots of super activity to both recruit and deploy heroes when trouble begins to stir. all heroes are expected to register to aegis in order to remain legal in the eyes of the united nations. unfortunately, this does mean that someone who registers will also be an agent of aegis, meaning that they not only answer to robert directly and follow his command, but they'll also have to forfeit their secret identity to the aegis database and, honestly, details on their personal life as a whole, but luckily aegis isn't the type of organization to just throw this information out into the public. director harrisson often reassures his employees that their secrets are safe with him. the benefits are great though, as all registered heroes are offered a free place to stay at the aegis headquarters, complete with the typical facilities, various training rooms with advanced training drones, research and development labs, shooting ranges, pools, massive dining halls, conference rooms for hero teams without a base yet, various break rooms, and pretty much anything else that you could think of. not to mention getting to be a legal superhero. careful not to cause too much property damage and try to save as many lives as you possibly can! being an aegis agent is a job, and superpower or not, no one is exempt from a shameful firing, though heroes aren't paid so it's moreso an extended, contracted volunteering gig.
[break]
reign - reign was established long before aegis, sprouting up at about the same time that solera became the world's first superhero. their leaders are comprised of some of the world's most powerful men that hid within the shadows with the goal of controlling the public from the shadows. they saw solera as a threat to their underground schemes, and such interference would not be tolerated. so much so that one of solera's first villains was a reign super-soldier experiment who dissolved during the fight due to an overload of power intake in 1940. while this did bring reign somewhat to the light, the group still managed to remain largely hidden to this day, though villains and anti-heroes of interest could certainly work with or become agents of reign, especially in this new generation of supers. reign can find you, or, the group can be found in a plethora of places as they have spies everywhere, hiding in plain sight, and many meeting locations are normal places. bars, spas, clubs, small shops and the like are typically fronts for reign with databases and archives with communication to the reign round table in the back of these "safehouses". heroes, vigilantes, and aegis agents who aren't spies don't know this either, even director harrisson himself, but they are aware of the group's existence as a whole and are looking for leads to bring them to light. rumor has it that the organization is now using their recruits from this new generation to push their agenda of world domination.
[break]
factions
heroes - heroes are registered good guys who stand to protect those who can't protect themselves. being that they're registered, they're also agents of aegis and have access to aegis resources along with legal rights to enacting their own law enforcement, so long as it doesn't result in killing unless absolutely necessary.
[break]
villains - villains are more freelance in comparison to heroes. they can work with reign but they don't have to. they can certainly do their own thing, whether that be their own agenda for world domination or wanting to reshape the world in their own image in hope of "making it a better place".
[break]
vigilantes - vigilantes are pretty much heroes that are just unregistered, meaning that they're pretty much everyone's enemy. they're the enemy of heroes and aegis because they're unregistered and illegal and they're the enemy of villains because they are still heroes that put a stop to evil deeds.
[break]
anti-heroes - anti-heroes may have the word hero in their name but on wgp, they are not technically heroes. anti-heroes are neutral individuals who don't typically ally themselves with conventional perceptions of good and evil. they may not save someone from a car crash but that doesn't mean they're an evil mastermind either, or, sometimes they do good things like stopping a villain but they have no problem being brutal and lethal about it, unlike heroes and vigilantes, and they may have only been obligated to do so on a job as anti-heroes are often mercenaries, contract killers or bounty hunters that are in it for themselves.
[break]
civilians - from the common citizen walking down the street to police officers, firefighters, office workers, even veteran soldiers, civilians are the "normal" group. however, this doesn't mean that they have to be powerless, they just wouldn't use their powers and skills so excessively or openly like heroes, vigilantes, villains and anti-heroes do.
[break]
sidekicks(?) - sidekicks do technically exist, but they aren't a role because aegis isn't disrespectful enough to register people as sidekicks and most villains don't care what their lackeys call themselves so long as the job gets done. sidekicks are more so a designated role from IC plotting than an official label. if a sidekick is evil, they're labeled as a villain, if a sidekick is registered, they're labeled as a hero, if a sidekick is unregistered, they're a vigilante, and so on.
The golden rule of the site is to treat everyone with respect. We will hold no tolerance towards bigotry, harassment, or bullying in any form or shape. The rule spans on all parts of the site including PMs, on the board, or the discord. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
[break]
In compliance with Proboards TOS, With Great Power is rated PG-13. Sexually explicit content will not be tolerated anywhere on the site or its extensions. While we may allow some explicit violence and foul language with moderation, however, staff may ask you to tone it down if necessary.
[break]
Plagiarism is not tolerated in any shape or form. While it is fine to recycle characters you have made in the past, be sure to edit them so that they fit the lore of the site. Creating carbon copies of fictional characters are STRONGLY not advised. We know that it's hard being that Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, Shonen Jump and other studios have already tackled a plethora of character concepts in terms of heroes and villains, so we're not saying "Don't make that character with Spider powers", just "Don't make that character with Spider Powers that's a nerd, constantly cracks jokes and hails from Queens." Get as creative and original as possible! If you are using the work of another, such as a template or artwork, give credit to the original creator.
[break]
Please respect the staff’s ruling. They have executive decisions over the site and its rules. Even if you may not agree with them, please bring the discussion to private messages rather than putting it out in the open. They are willing and happy to work with you so long as there is mutual respect on both sides. If you believe that a staff member is acting in an inappropriate manner, please contact Skyfather or Braveo.
[break]
Accounts should only have one character and no more. If you wish to make another character, create another account. OOC accounts are fine but they should be strictly reserved for OOC interactions and nothing else.
[break]
There is no character limit on the site, however, be sensible with the amount you take on. If you cannot handle more than a certain limit, then do not surpass it. Staff may be liable to put a lock on the creation of more characters until one either archives a character or you prove your activity on your current one.
[break]
Archived characters are permanently lost and cannot be recovered. Think about whether you wish to archive a character or not before you do so.
[break][break]
rp rules
Godmodding, metagaming, power-gaming, auto hitting, and anything similar to such behavior is forbidden. The only character you may control is your own. Characters are not invincible and are expected to act within their designated limits. If you say your character moves at 40 MPH, they should not be breaking the sound barrier or disappearing from eyesight in their threads. In addition, they DO NOT have knowledge that a player may know OOC, even if your character has telepathy, supernatural intelligence, or they may be from the future, at the very least ask your partner(s) first! Violation of this rule is a serious offense and will not be taken lightly.
[break]
The site is an original universe with the closest connection to other comics being some influenced characters and concepts. As such, there are no canon comic book characters to claim and play as. Superman, Iron Man, Invincible, Spawn, Hell Boy, Saitama, All Might and those from these universes do not exist. All characters are expected to be original creations.
[break]
Real-life face claims are prohibited. We are an animanga site, after all! Original works and videogame characters are allowed so long as they possess this animated style.
[break]
Players are allowed to make one face claim change when it comes to their characters. This face claim change request is made by posting in the claims thread with your newly desired FC (of course, so long as it isn't already taken) and then post in the notification thread, clearly notifying staff in some way that you're making an FC swap.
[break]
The site operates on liquid time, meaning that threads take place on the day that they are created, although the time of day is up to the player’s discretion.
[break]
Characters may not kill, maim, or anything of the like without the permission of another player. In addition, large scale threads such as attempting world domination, a cataclysmic fight to the death, attempted mass genocide and so on will require the use of the Crisis Alert (CA) tag which is essentially a potentially world-changing event where death is enabled.
[break]
CAs and Death Enabled threads as a whole must happen for a reason. For example: Dr.Manifesto can't just challenge Ultraman to a battle to death simply because he can. There has to be more substantial IC reasoning for starting CAs and DEs, such as it being a step in a master plan or an attempt at vengeance.
[break]
When it comes to the application process, please follow the format in the application. We understand people like to add their own flair to things but changing too much may end up just causing confusion for both staff and the members.
[break]
Lastly, while we don't want to come off as pretentious, disorganized posts full of grammatical errors and the like are greatly discouraged by staff. Furthermore, while there is no set word count minimum, please make sure your partner(s) have enough to respond to!
[break]
Lastly, part 2: thank you for reading the rules! You can find the link to our Discord server here: discord.gg/93Cbqf2
The planet Earth first made alien contact when a spaceship crash landed on a farm in Wayport City, Maryland in 1918, containing a baby girl. The last of her race. Before this, there had been recorded (yet often discredited) encounters with various entities of supernatural origin. However, with this undeniable confirmation of the existence of aliens along with the various monsters, demons, mutants, mad geniuses and so forth that had been reported prior, it was clear that the world was soon to change. [break][break] Years passed, the girl living in the shadows as instructed to by her adoptive parents. She ignored the wars, all the violence that ensued around her despite the fact that she could do something about it, until one fateful day. The year was 1938, and her closest friend stumbled into a street, seemingly fated for a bitter end. But the alien woman would not allow this to happen, foregoing her parent’s wishes and blitzing into the street at full speed to save her friend. After such a public act, it was certainly difficult to hide her “heritage”, and thus she announced to the world that she would now and forever be known as: Solera, the Super Woman. The Iron Maiden. The first official superhero. [break][break] For decades, she saved lives all over the planet and inspired many as the symbol of peace, whether for better or for worse. Solera began a wave of comic books and real life superheroes on Earth. Mutants, aliens, demons, and more became not only superheroes but supervillains alike. The world governments decided to attempt to make their own heroes to represent their countries, super soldiers that would both save citizens and fight in wars. This first generation culture of superheroes continued all the way until 2000, the turn of not only the century but the entirety of supers. [break][break] Now, at 82 years of age, Solera was still powerful, but she was past her prime. This was made all too clear during a cataclysmic battle for Wayport City against a mysterious, powerful creature that seemed unreasonably hell-bent on death and destruction. Fortunately, the creature was killed, but the Solera did not survive the battle, shaking the world to its core. The Iron Maiden was now gone forever, and to fill the gap, a new generation of heroes and villains spawned all over the world, another super boom that was similar to that of the boom many decades ago. [break][break] Once again, the planet Earth is due for an immense change. [break][break] To help this be a change for the better, a man named Robert Harrison, a former super-soldier, and his colleagues decided that the world needed security services more dedicated to helping usher in these new hopefuls to be registered, legal heroes. Come 2010, upon its completion, he would launch said organization: a special task force called Aegis. [break][break] The year is now 2020. The second coming of the age of Supers is here, and in this world of unyielding heroism and terrifying villainy, who will you become?
