Sarah Howlett was conceived during a night of passion between the superhero Joe Cosmic (real name Joseph Ryan) and Lady Mary Howlett - her parents never married, and indeed never had any sort of relationship other than mutual physical attraction. Her conception and birth were something of a scandal in both her parents’ circles.

Sarah’s earliest years were defined by two things - the love her mother showered upon her, and the utter contempt with which they were both treated by her other relatives. For the longest time, Sarah’s mother was the only source of warmth that Sarah could find in her family; her maternal grandparents and older aunts looked on them both with scorn.

At eleven years of age, Sarah was sent off to boarding school. There, she found little respite from loneliness - her classmates were quick to latch onto her illegitimacy and the shameful circumstances of her birth, and she was quickly made an outcast.
