Warm wind danced across the Savvy Shores. The evening sun was beginning to slip below the horizon. As the shadows grew longer, the strange creatures of the night came out to play... More commonly known as young couples and frat kids. The Conjubilant Theme Park was a popular spot for people looking to unwind after a long day. Stomach-turning rides and overpriced carnival food went so well together after all. Though to be fair, there was a wonderful selection of variety. Roller coasters, bumper cars and even a haunted house, there was something for everyone. You could come here every day for a whole week and still have something new to experience.
Or so some ignorant dummies boasted anyway.
See, people who said they would never get bored of the city’s famous theme park had clearly never tried living in it. Then again, living was kind of a strong word here... Look, the point was that after spending a week here the whole place started feeling stale. Predictable. Boring. The view from the ferris wheel was great the first time, not so much after that. Both rollercoasters always went the same route at the same speeds. And calling those things bumper cars was misleading at best, considering how little actual bumping happened. Even scaring the night guard had lost its charm after the first couple of nights.
Among the crowd wandered a blonde, slender woman, quietly lamenting her boredom. Her outfit was rather strange, a dark jumpsuit with a hood that vaguely resembled the head of a snake. Dotted tattoos of the same theme coiled around her arms. And yet... Nobody seemed to pay her any mind. They were all wrapped up in their own, little lives. She swept her half-closed gaze over all the lovey-dovey couples wandering about. Blegh... Just watching them made her want to gag. Slowly her bored pout twisted into a grin full of sharp teeth. Right... Enough of moping around. If this place couldn’t offer her anymore entertainment, then she would make her own. It was time for The Laughing Lady to make a new appearance...
Soon, a chorus of screams echoed from the big rollercoaster. ...Okay, screams far more frantic than usual. A cart had suddenly stopped at the apex of a loop, leaving people hanging upside down. The person manning the controls found himself briefly wondering how he had managed to accidentally hit the emergency stop, before getting violently ejected out of the booth by unseen arms. He could’ve sworn he briefly saw a bloodied woman inside, but when he blinked she was gone. When he tried to stagger back, the door slammed shut right in front of him and locked itself. Ghastly laughter mocked his attempt to break the door with his noodle arms. The situation went from bad to worse as the switch labeled ‘lock restraints’ clicked from on to off...

”So… Crowded. I’ve never been one for rides, but at least the cotton candy tastes good.” [break][break]
A figure in a red hoodie made her way across the large amusement complex. Every which way she turned, she could see happy thrill-ride goers, couples, and families setting about their fun within Savvy Shores. Kyoko was roaming about the Conjubilant Theme Park (whose name was as pretentious as its rides) without a date, friend, or otherwise companion to grant her any company. It wasn’t anything new for the mask-faced tanuki-girl, though. She’d always been a lonely child, and more so now than ever as she was away from her motherland. [break][break]
Back rest against a nearby theme park wall, her fangs dug into the fluffy goodness of her blueberry-flavored cotton candy. Kyoko let out a satisfied hum and gazed up to the sky. She wasn’t really here to participate in the park activities, but rather, she wanted to observe the seagulls and land critters that scampered across this area of Wayport. Kyoko eavesdropped into their chatter curiously. She let out a giggle every so often when a seagull would insult a human without them even realizing. [break][break]
Human-kind… So oblivious to the world around them. Kyoko felt embarrassed that she’d once been like this many years prior. [break][break]
”H-Huh?” [break][break]
But there wasn’t time to reminisce. Kyoko was dragged away from her delighted stupor when sounds of shrill screams assaulted her fluffy ears. Promptly she cranked her head upward and saw the commotion unfolding at the park’s largest rollercoasters. She squinted her eyes. It seemed as if the control operator had gotten locked out of his booth, and one of the cars was stuck in an upside-down position. [break][break]
”Uh-oh.” [break][break]
And worse yet, the patrons’ restraints were slowly lifting. The folks hanging upside down would surely plummet to their death if nothing was done to stop it! [break][break]
”S-Shimatta! Agh, I’ve got to get over there!” [break][break]
She looked around. Kyoko was certain she was the only hero here on the scene. She let out a raggard sigh and briskly shook her head. Kyoko hated large rides, they frightened her. But what would be even more frightening was the reprimand she’d get from Aegis for standing idly and doing nothing. She had to get in there, even if she didn’t want to. [break][break]
With a grunt, the girl quickly tore off her hoodie and threw it to the concrete ground, revealing a superhero outfit that would likely only be familiar to few. Kyoko was a newbie amongst the likes of the heroes, but it didn’t mean that she was any less important than the others. [break][break]
[break][break]
[break][break]
She rushed forward into a sprint. A greenish aura overtook her legs as she ran. They transformed into the one’s of a cheetah. Kyoko -- Or now, Kunoichi-Chan -- sped forward with remarkable speed towards the ride. A track of dust was left behind her as she weaved her way around standing patrons and other stands. [break][break]
Finally, when she got close enough, Kunoichi gave a great leap. Her cheetah legs dissipated and instead, wings sprouted from her back. She soared and captured the dangling people from their carts and prevented them from falling to their death. Kunoichi landed onto the ground now with many people either in her grasp or hanging onto her short body. [break][break]
”Everyone, stay calm!” She announced loudly, doing her best to sound authoritative, ”Move away from this ride! Please run over to the assembly point and wait there for Security to give you further directions!” [break][break]
Although she’d managed to remove the most at-risk from the coater, there were still other patrons on the coaster that needed to be removed from the ride. As the people began to filter away, Kunoichi-Chan stood back to her feet and moved over towards the booth. She needed to turn everything off and ensure that the ride would not move as she dealt with this mess. [break][break]
”Hey, what’s the deal? What happened?” Kunoichi-Chan asked, looking up at the booth operator. As she awaited a response, the heroine readied a large, gorilla-morphed fist, prepared to bust the booth door down. [break][break]
The ghost in the machine popped out to admire her handiwork. Through the plexiglass of the control booth she watched as the dangling dummies desperately clung to life. Oh, now this was far more entertaining than riding around in circles. Just as the first one’s strength failed... A hero entered the scene! One after another, the helpless civilians were saved from broken bones and worse. Screams of terror soon changed to cheers of relief.
Meanwhile, the invisible specter giggled to herself. “Nyeh heh heh heh...” The haunting sound took a twisted echo from the booth’s walls, dancing at the edges of human hearing. Just distant and faint enough to make the bystanders wonder if they were only hearing things... As an act of defiance, she twisted all the important-looking knobs to the max setting and started the ride again. Outside, the colorful lights lining the ride’s entrance buzzed and flashed. The carts started moving again, starting a new loop. It quickly picked up the speed. The poor passengers could only hold on for dear life.
While the hero questioned the worker, the curious ghost peeked through the door. She quirked a brow at the furry girl who seemed... Kinda lopsided with that fist, actually. Wait, didn’t she have wings just moments before? Eh, whatever. She had never been a huge hero buff, so neither the face nor the costume rang any bells. Didn’t matter anyway. Fun was the only thing that mattered. And she knew just the thing to have some... Retreating back into the booth, she gathered her focus. Her invisible form turned visible again. She rubbed her face vigorously, morphing the ectoplasm into a new, illusory form. Hee, she always felt like an actress getting ready to step onto the stage...
The booth operator fiddled his cap nervously. He tried his best to keep his nasally voice from cracking and failed miserably. “I-I-I-I dunno! The ride just started a-a-a-acting weird. And something pushed me andandand then I think the wind shut the door...” His wavering explanation sounded suspicious at best and outright lies at worst. Luckily, a helpful voice was there to back him up, a voice as light as a silver bell. “Maybe it was a ghost.” A spark of hope lit up in his eyes. “Yeah, maybe it was... uh...” After glancing towards the voice, he slowly trailed off as the suggestion actually registered in his addled mind.
There was a chill in the air.
A blonde woman now stood in front of the door, blocking the path. Her bangs cast a grim shadow over her face. A smile too sharp and wide for a human mouth split her features in half. Red tears had dried on her cheeks long ago. Blink... And she was gone. Trembling like a leaf in the wind, the operator slowly turned to the hero. Pale as snow, he swallowed the clump of fear clogging his throat. “D-d-d-d-did you see that... too...?” He wasn’t sure which answer he dreaded more. Meanwhile, the mischievous prankster hadn’t actually gone anywhere. She had simply faded out of sight again. ...Well, regular sight anyway.

Just as the tanuki heroine thought that she was one hefty punch away from settling this whole ordeal, the gears, buttons, and handles of the coater’s control panel began to move on their own! Once again, the worrying sounds of terrified screams resounded in the air. Kunoichi-Chan clenched her teeth. ”What the hell is going on?!” [break][break]
The operator’s answer did not seem to resonate with the girl, though. ”Forced out? But how?” [break][break]
Well, Kyoko did not have to wait much longer for that inquiry to be answered. [break][break]
She clenched her fangs at the sound of another mysterious voice. Soon, a figure emerged, seemingly out of nowhere. Kunoichi retracted her fist, hopped backward, and shuddered. If her demented appearance weren’t enough of a queue, Kunoichi could sense that whoever this woman was, she wasn’t normal. The energy emanating off of her wasn’t dissimilar to one of a Yokai, albeit it felt much more weighed down with ill intent. [break][break]
Like a ghost, she vanished. Kunoichi squinted her eyes, and, momentarily, they glimmered a faint blue. The strange woman came into view once more. [break][break]
”Ugh! It is a Yokai!” She grumbled, ears flattening against her head. Kunoichi had not met many since arriving in the States, but it made sense that they might have the wish to migrate across the world. It was uncommon for them to actively seek out trouble, however. [break][break]
Things began to click on Kyoko’s head. Randomly being forced out of a booth? Mysteriously moving buttons? It must have been this spirit’s work. [break][break]
”I don’t have time for this-- you don’t need to cause chaos to find a human to enchant!” Kunoichi growled, having assumed that this “Yokai” was needy for human contact. ”I can find one for you later, but please, stop all of this! This is uncalled for!” [break][break]
She had bigger troubles to deal with at the moment, though. Many of the ride-goers-turned-dangling-passengers were starting to lose their grip on unstable cars. There was no time to fly over there and rescue everyone. Kunoichi needed to resort to other means. [break][break]
Reaching into her utility belt, Kunoichi retrieved a few dozen plant seeds. She drew her arm backward and gave a mighty toss. Midair, they began to glow. [break][break]
”Germinate!” [break][break]
The seeds grew immensely in size and began to transform into giant clumps of spongy mesophyll. The green squares plopped on the ground underneath the coaster, providing a safe cushion for the passengers to fall onto. The ones that first lost their grip plummeted but safely landed onto the platform of mesophyll. Many others began to follow suit. [break][break]
Kunoichi stood tall and protectively before the operator. She stared down the strange apparition and drew a flower from her sleeve. Its stalk began to grow in size and sharpen. Its petals curled at the base, creating a sword-shaped plant that was just as functional as any other. Kunoichi swung it threateningly at the mysterious lady. [break][break]
”Personally, I’m not one for hurting Yokai. But if you don’t leave now, I’ll have to make sure you do by force.”
The hardest part of every prank was holding back the laughter while the mortals fumbled around. Lily had gotten her alias for a reason, you know. She brought her hands to her lips to suppress the creeping snickers. Oh, these tense moments of fear and anxiety were super addicting~! There was just one tiny detail that bothered her... For some reason, it felt like the heroic meddler was still staring right at her. Scratch that... It didn’t only feel like that. Shock shot through the specter so hard that her wide-eyed, slack-jawed face morphed back to a regular human form. “W-wait, you can still see me???” ...Hold on, what did the weird girl call her?
After the initial surprise wore off, the ghost’s lips curled into a crescent grin. Now this was definitely new. While she had no idea what the furry weirdo was babbling about, she found it amusing nonetheless. Maybe the unspoken assumption about the spirit being needy wasn't entirely inaccurate... She watched with growing interest as the hero pulled out another nifty trick. Strange cushions saved the rest of the helpless passengers. “Well, aren’t you just full of surprises~?” Unfortunately, the display only made her want to dig deeper, to see what other entertaining tricks she could squeeze out of the hero. For better or worse, the stranger now had her undivided attention.
As the meddler brandished a sword of sorts and made her point clear, the prankster cocked her head. A pondering hum left her lips. “There’s that weird word again...” She shook the brewing questions out of her mind. “Hm, you know what? Doesn’t matter. Label me whatever you like~!” Mischievous giggling bubbled to the surface. “Nyeh hehehehe... Silly lil’ trash panda... I’m not gonna fight you...” She watched the swinging blade with the same disinterest that most people directed at a toothpick. Unsurprisingly, the fear of pain and death had left her a long time ago. Her smile sharpened and her tone darkened.
“Instead, we are gonna have lots of fun~!”
With the ominously playful declaration, the villain turned tail. She dashed right through the locked door and the booth’s back wall, leaving the hero to deal with the rampaging roller coaster. The escape route took her directly into the gawking crowd of bystanders. They had gathered to see what was going on here. “Let’s play tag! For keeps.” Her voice chimed in the wind, haunting, taunting the foe. “Better catch me before something else happens~!” Blending into the crowd was much easier when she could simply pass through the ignorant people. She was sprinting towards the bumper cars, already planning her next prank.
Sneaking past the line was easy for an invisible infiltrator. She crept up to the operator, who was lazily scrolling away on her phone. Evidently flicking power on and off all day long could get pretty boring. Go figure. The poor girl shrieked when a grinning apparition suddenly appeared in front of her and promptly pushed her over the safety railing. The dirt didn’t offer the softest landing either. “Sweet dreams~” With the operator out of the way, the ghost turned her attention towards the cars. She hopped onto the closest one, startling the teenage boy driving it. While he was trying to decide between protesting and dropping a cheesy pick-up line, she latched onto the steering wheel. An unseen force gave the hijacked car a little push and it rocketed forward far faster than normal.

”Gah! Hold on!” [break][break]
Almost as soon as the strange apparition appeared, it had begun to flee. This was no good. Bystanders were still filtering around, leaving room for potential collateral damage if Kunoichi didn’t do something soon. She needed to be hot on this spirit’s trail before more damage was done to the theme park! [break][break]
Kyoko stowed her sword away onto her belt and soon her wings reemerged once more. She moved away from the booth and ran forward, promptly taking off into the skies. [break][break]
”Please, you all need to evacuate! There’s a threat around, but it can’t be seen by usual human eyes! I know things don’t look terrible right now, but you have to leave!” Shouted Kyoko again, dark blue brows furrowing with frustration. Why didn’t citizens like to listen? [break][break]
Soaring after the enemy, Kyoko would land close to a nearby bumper car rink. She clenched her teeth with concern when she saw the operator fall, but she needed to prioritize the most vulnerable life at the moment; the folks within the cars. [break][break]
Before leaping over the railing and into the rink, the ninja-Tanuki placed her palms to the surrounding concrete ground. Her hand gave off a faint glow for a moment before her body began to completely morph. Her body took on the concrete material below her, replicating it so that her skin was as hard, sturdy, and heavy as stone. [break][break]
Now in the rink, Kunoichi-Chan caught sight of the apparition that was now manning the vehicle. It was zooming straight forward, and in her direction! [break][break]
Kyoko took a stance and extended her arms. She ran forward, and splayed her palms forth, attempting to grasp onto the hood of the car. Kyoko planted her feet down and attempted to stop the vehicle from moving further, her feet skidding backward as the opposing force was pushing against her. [break][break]
”Grah, this is enough! You don’t need to go about all this chaos!” [break][break]
Kyoko motioned a swiping hand upward, summoning a pillar of stone underneath the car to pierce its middle so that it was suspended above ground -- all while avoiding injuring the passenger inside. If the rouge vehicle couldn’t move, there’d be at least a smidgen time for the other riders to escape. [break][break]
If her efforts had done anything to stop the movement of the car, Kyoko would attempt to leap up onto the skewered car’s hood and rescue the boy into one of her rocky arms, carrying bridal-style. ”Are you alright?” [break][break]
Her other arm, however, was used to emerge a boulder from the ground beneath her and then cast the rock towards this malicious spirit with the intent of crushing her in place. But of course, Kyoko was not completely aware of the tangibility of her foe.[break][break]
Before the rampaging ghost could really put the bump in bumper cars, the meddling hero intervened again. Even with telekinesis backing up the electric motor, the car couldn’t quite push the heavy roadblock. The tires started squealing as they lost traction. Getting impaled was the last straw and the engine died with a weak whine. Naturally, the troublemaker was less than ecstatic over this turn of events. Wearing a wry smile, she taunted the tanuki. “Oh look, the fun police is here. Just throw all the fun in jail, why don’t you? Nyeeeeeeh~!” She stuck out her tongue to underline her opinion. So far the attempts to reason weren’t exactly resonating with her. Wonder why...?
As the hero hopped onto the stopped car, the villain abandoned the ride. The innocent passenger found himself saved. And how! He looked up at the girl with such wonder it almost looked like his eyes were twinkling. A healthy red blush spread across his features as he struggled to find the words. “Like, I’m now, babe. You’re, like, my angel and stuff.” ...Or maybe he just talked like that all the time. Someone had just gotten a new fan.
Meanwhile, Lily gagged at the sweet words being blurted out. Bleh. She couldn’t stand that sappy stuff. Luckily, something more solid was thrown her way soon enough. She barely had time to raise a brow at the boulder. It seemed the hero was trying to crush her. And that gave her an idea. An awful, wonderful idea. Oh, that thing would crush her alright... Sure, she could’ve passed through it effortlessly, but where was the fun in that? Instead, the boulder nailed her dead on and dragged her several feet back before finally crashing against the ground. The silence that followed felt deafening.
While the dust still lingered, like a lost tourist looking for the bathroom, the trickster was already setting up the next trick. She spent every precious second moulding her illusory body to a more fitting form. The kind that was expected when one got hit by a huge rock. Crush this, tear that, flatten those... And for the finishing touch, a splatter of crimson! Okay, showtime~! She flopped onto the ground, limp and lifeless. When the crowd saw the mangled woman lying beneath the boulder, gasps spread like ripples in a pond. The sight was so gruesome that one old lady even fainted. Playing dead was so easy when, well, you were actually dead. The hard part was keeping in the laughter bubbling from her soul. Juuust a little longer... Until the hero saw the horror...

[attr="class","yuki-text"] Having landed onto the ground now, Rock-Kunoichi took a moment to reform her body back to its usual fleshy state. She shook her body like a freshly washed dog would, ridding herself of the stony confinement of her previous form and puffing out of fur. She slowly and carefully looked over the boy she’d just saved from toe to head. No obvious wounds or blemishes. Kyoko let out a sigh of relief. Thank goodness. [break][break]
Finally her bright emerald eyes locked with the boy’s and her tanuki ears flattened against her head timidly. The once stern and heroic demeanor she exudes moments before evaporated away. Kyoko was not good with compliments, especially not ones of this flirtatious nature! He was no eloquent Romeo but the way he looked into her eyes was surely telling. Kyoko blushed and gently set him down before attempting to slink away like an embarrassed school girl. Her left arm held her right abashedly. ”M-My name’s Kunoichi-Chan. U-Um, I’m glad I could help.” She stuttered, her voice growing more faint with every sentence. ”B-B-But I wouldn’t want you to get hurt, so please get to safety away from here!” [break][break]
Her red hot blush well burnt its way into her cheeks; Kyoko needed relief. She gave a quick wave and scampered away. So caught up in her mushy heroics, she’d failed to realize the forming crowd just a few meters away from where all the action had happened. Kyoko knew she’d attempted to pin her Yokai-enemy down with a boulder. With this large gathering, Kyoko assumed it must have worked and her enemy was subdued. With a grin of triumph, she weaved through the crowd to approach closer. [break][break]
But Kyoko noticed that the faces of the onlookers were not relieved, but instead terrified. The air lacked the usual cheers and hoots celebrating a valiant heroine. Finally, when Kyoko made her way to the front, she saw what had sucked the life out of the crowd. [break][break]
”Oh shit… [break][break]
[break][break]
I-I killed her?!”
[break][break]
No way. Frightened at the gnarly scene before her, the girl’s fur bristled at its end. Gagging, the girl stumbled backward, eventually falling onto her hind just a few inches away from the mangled body. She clenched her teeth and fought the urge to vomit. Kyoko might have been a Superhero but she was still a child at heart. There was no amount of Aegis training that could prepare one for the irony smell of blood and sight of torn muscles in this horrific manner. It wasn’t a thing anyone would want to experience. [break][break]
”I-I…!” [break][break]
She didn’t mean to. [break][break]
Most Yokai were relatively sturdy. It was so strange for a simple attack to leave one in such terrible shape. Kyoko frantically gazed around the crowd. No medical unit in sight, but bounds upon bounds of unnerved faces. [break][break]
Anxious tears welled up into her eyes. She was truly alone on this one. [break][break]
Kyoko needed to do something. She didn’t wish for death upon anyone or anything, even if this spirit had done wrong. The girl got up to her feet and slowly walked towards the woman. She motioned her arms forward and pushed the boulder away from her body. [break][break]
Next, Kyoko got onto her knees. The only way she knew she could remotely fix this was by using her Animancy magic. She brought her hands together and they began to glow a bright green. She closed her eyes and gave a prayer: [break][break]
”Mother Nature, please help me restore the life-energy of this rogue Yokai. In… Exchange for some of my own.” [break][break]
Exposed now, the girl’s glowing hands slowly approached what was left of this spirit’s body...
If there had been a heart in the ghost’s chest, it would’ve been pounding with anticipation. Through her open, unblinking eyes, she could see the shaken girl drawing closer. She could barely contain herself anymore. Every second was such wonderful torture where she wasn’t allowed to laugh or the whole ruse would be ruined. Closer, closer, ever closer... The dead facade betrayed none of the impatience boiling within. Ahhh, this was killing her! Hurry! Hurryhurryhurry! It was a good thing she didn’t have to hold her breath or bite her tongue. And for playing her part perfectly, she was rewarded with the perfect opportunity...
When the hero finally came within arm’s reach, the villain suddenly twitched. Her hand snapped up, trying to grip the teen’s wrist. And if she caught the hero, she would grip tightly... Her touch was as cold as the grave. Twisting her head around in a way no neck should bend, she gave the tanuki a chilling glare. Her pale lips parted and a raspy growl crawled from the depths of her throat. “Murderer...” Following the grim accusation, her voice hit the other extreme as she let out a piercing scream. It gained a haunting echo from the surrounding crowd, like a choir gone mad crying in unison.
Jumpscares were so much fun~!
However, the ghastly woman’s scream soon cracked and shattered into maniacal laughter. “Pft~! Heh~ Aahahahahaha!” She clutched her stomach, if only out of an old habit, and rolled on the ground. Though she had no insides anymore, laughter tickled her soul all the same. She tried to compose herself enough to at least mock the hero. “Oh man... You... heheh... you should’ve seen the look on your dumb face...” Grabbing her head, she squished it into a lousy imitation of the cute tanuki, complete with a totally inaccurate voice impression. “O-o-oh, shit... I-I k-k-k-killed her? Heehehawhawhaa~!” Aaaaand so much for that composure. Back to rolling she went.
Still giggling madly, Lily rose from the dirt like a marionette pulled by unseen strings. Her battered body shimmered as the imaginary injuries faded away. Within moments, she was as good as new. It seemed she had finally gotten most of the giggles out of her system too. “Silly trash panda...” Wearing her usual, sharp grin, she loomed over the hero. The playful tone suddenly sounded far more ominous. “You can’t kill what’s already dead~” And there it was, the source of her overflowing confidence.

[attr="class","yuki-text"] ”A-Ah!” [break][break]
As her palms moved closer to the mangled body in an attempt to possibly reform the woman she’d killed, Kyoko would let out a yelp when suddenly, as if briefly brought back to life, the mutilated corpse grabbed a hold of one of her arm’s wrists. The glowing stopped and Kyoko froze dead in place, the color immediately draining from her fluffy face. Her body told her to run but fear had already well overtaken her body. [break][break]
”I-I didn’t mean to kill anyone!” Kyoko shrieked. [break][break]
But the other woman screamed louder. The girl hugged her knees and cowered, covering her tanuki ears and attempted to block out the terrifying sight before her. Kyoko was not used to dealing with such otherworldly matters. [break][break]
Thankfully, however, the terror was only momentarily. Suddenly, the wailing sound before her ceased and was instead replaced by a fit of giggles. Kyoko glanced up. This mysterious apparition mocked her. [break][break]
Had she not died moments before? [break][break]
Good as new, after a bit of rolling the apparition got up onto her feet. Kyoko did so too, but much more gradually. She narrowed her emerald eyes with serious discontent. Kyoko understood now. She shouldn’t have been so easily fooled; this Yokai must have used a sort of illusion to pull off that gruesome scene. But, it was unusual for one to pull it off so well in such little time. [break][break]
”Already dead?” Kyoko inquired, raising an eyebrow. [break][break]
She was a ghost? [break][break]
Well, it would explain some of the other incapabilities of a Yokai. But... that wasn’t right, was it? Mortal souls weren’t supposed to be able to stay on a mortal plane for this exact reason! How was this woman able to do so? [break][break]
Kyoko’s face flushed. She wasn’t scared anymore. Just irritated. Her fur bristled at its end. [break][break]
”What do you want?!” Kyoko snarled, baring her fangs at the ghost. ”Are you happy now that you’ve endangered the lives of tons of people? [break][break]
If you’re so desperately after fun, I can give you some-- just you and me! But leave these innocent people out of this!” She exclaimed. Clearly, Kyoko had seen just about enough for today. Her fur on her short body was all puffed up. She was irritated. [break][break]
Kyoko knew that, on her own, she did not have the tools to scare off a ghost. But if she could get away from this environment, maybe she could get some other supernatural assistance… [break][break]
”Just you and me!” Kyoko declared, pointing an accusatory index claw at the strange ghost’s body. She needed to get this ghost to buy into her agreement. ”Or are you too much of a scaredy cat to agree? I wouldn't blame you; ghosts only seem to like to take the cowardly way out, anyway.”
The question was met with, of course, a cheeky grin. “Yup. D-e-a-d. Dead.” The ghost enjoyed watching people try to puzzle together how a dead woman could still be walking. She would never tell~! It was all just willpower, she didn’t need to explain a thing! Ah, and then there was the million dollar question... What did she want, hm? Well, she just smiled. They both knew the answer already. In fact, she was far more interested in poking the metaphorical beehive. “Psh, what’s the big deal? Worst case they die and turn into ghosts. It did wonders for me~!” Living was overrated anyway.
However, the hero managed to wipe the smug smile off of the trickster’s face. Her brow quirked, unsure whether it wanted to be at quizzical or intrigued height. Was... that a challenge...? “Oh~? Oh hohoho...” Because it sure sounded like a challenge. The accusation of cowardice hit somewhere deep, into a place she figured had been buried a good while ago. Her features twisted and darkened. “I know you’re playing me...” A pause for effect, before the cheery, chiming tone returned. “...And I can’t wait to see how you screw this up~!” Yup, this was totally a trap. But who was trapping whom, now that was the fun question.
Lily cast a devious glance at the gawking crowd around them. “Ho hum, alright, it’s a deal. Just you and me...” Her smile sharpened into a crescent grin. “So let me clear some space.” Suddenly the lights around them started popping, one after another, like they were bashed by invisible fists. Broken glass showered the unsuspecting civilians. Startled, they started screaming and quickly fled the scene. Within a short moment, the area near the bumper cars was empty. It was silly how many so-called grown-ups were still afraid of the dark. Though to be fair, you never knew what lurked in the shadows...
With the one last prank played, the trickster directed her undivided attention to the posturing hero before her. Leaning closer, she looked down on the puffed up teen. “Nyeh hee, lead the way, lil’ trash panda.” Sure, height was a vague concept for someone without an actual body, buuut at the moment she simply enjoyed looming over the shorter girl. Enticed by the promise of fun, she was willing to follow the hero pretty much anywhere. Even into an obvious trap. There weren’t many traps that could hold her after all.

[attr="class","yuki-text"] Kyoko let out a low growl as her ghostly opponent scared off the innocent bystanders. For a moment, the tanuki girl was questioning if she’d even made the right choice. Sure, the defenseless citizens were away from this menace’s reach, but Kyoko wasn’t sure if her plan was sure proof. She had still been practicing her skills with Yokai communication, and nothing was ever guaranteed. She could call a spirit forth and let it embody her, but what was there to say they’d even be powerful enough to deal with a ghost? [break][break]
And, perhaps, more worryingly, Kyoko had no control over her body when possessed. Would her selected Yokai agree to her terms? [break][break]
“...lead the way, lil’ trash panda.” [break][break]
She narrowed her eyes. [break][break]
“I’m a Tanuki.”
[break][break]
There was only one way to find out. [break][break]
She did as the ghost woman wished. With a huff, Kyoko pushed -- or phased -- past her blonde enemy, and began once again revealed her wings and flew off. As soon as she was airborne, she could feel the surrounding wind blow through her navy-colored locks. Whatever euphoric energy that had once been buzzing through this amusement park was scared off by the unpleasant presence of a dark miasma. [break][break]
Eventually, she landed near an outdoor food court. There were no rides here which meant there were fewer objects that could end up becoming collateral damage. Kyoko had already caused enough of a fracas-- she didn’t need to park owners hating her any more than she had to. [break][break]
She folded her wings and stood stiff, turning around to face wherever her opponent was now standing. [break][break]
Kyoko let a seed slide down from sleeve which morphed itself into a green kunai. She rose the small knife before her. But instead of throwing the weapon at the ghost, Kyoko actually gave herself a minor cut across the palm. Quickly, blood began to seep from her wound. The girl clenched her injured hand into a fist and rested the balled hand against her chest. [break][break]
”Jubokko, please, help me handle this spirit.” [break][break]
Kyoko’s body suddenly gave off a blinding luminescence. The girl’s body began to morph. She grew taller and new features became defined, such as the large antlers atop the now pale and furless woman’s head. [break][break]
The transformation was completed. This new version of Kyoko opened her eyes and adjusted to the light. [break][break]
She let out a guttural bellow. [break][break]
”Hmmph. This was what that little tanuki was so worried about?” [break][break]
The Jubokko-woman stared forward at the enemy with curious eyes.
As the hero walked through the villain’s intangible body and flew off, the latter turned to follow close behind. “A what now?” She questioned the weird word briefly. Where one wielded actual wings, the other just sort of drifted weightlessly like a balloon. Unseen force propelled the trickster along, allowing her to keep up easily enough. The wind didn’t caress her skin or ruffle her hair. It only passed right through... Like everything else. She watched the results of her show with a smug smile, occasionally letting out a pleased hum. Shadows stained the darkened part of the park like an inkstain on an otherwise colorful paper. Even dead she could make a bigger impression that these dullards did while alive.
Soon enough, the unfriendly duo landed near the food court. Lily plopped down to sit on the roof of a corn dog stand. She watched with keen interest as her opponent... cut her own palm? If the strategy was meant to confuse her, it was definitely working. She sloooowly cocked her head, trying to make sense of the words being thrown around. Was it a spell? A prayer? A call to some sort of demonic customer service line? Well, whatever it was, it sure seemed bright. Sheesh. Once the transformation was over, the ghost was... underwhelmed at best. “...Soooo you finally hit puberty? Hooray for you.” The teasing comment was flat and blunt like getting bopped with a rolled-up newspaper.
As the new figure spoke up, the ghost immediately got hung up in a certain detail. “There’s that word again. I swear it’s something you just made up.” She hopped down from her perch and circled the pale stranger with lazy steps. Her inquisitive gaze swept up and down. No fur... Weird horns... Hm. She had expected something bigger and hairier from a trump card. Like a werewolf. Or would that be a wereraccoon? Eh, whatever.
Upon completing the circle, the cocky specter stopped right in front of the foe. There was a spark of realization in those golden eyes. “Waaaait, are you the thing that’s supposed to handle me?” Her smile slowly widened. Ominous laughter crept from her lips. “Heh heh heh... Well...” Her entire body started growing, stretching to resemble a twisted parody of a mannequin. Taller... Ever taller... Until she towered twice as tall as the mysterious stranger. With a nasty, fleshy sound her fingers warped into scythe-like claws. The golden shrunk into glowing pinpricks. Finally that slowly widening smile split apart to reveal a row of monstrous teeth. A grim rumble crawled from the depths of her throat to mock the opponent.
[attr="class","yuki-text"]With Kyoko’s body now possessed, Jubokko now had complete control over it and its functions. The spirit-lady gave a grin at the other’s fearsome rebuttal. Lacking any of Kyoko’s morals, anger, or inhibitions, Jubokko truly had free range. For as long as the Yokai summoning pact lasted, of course. What was it again? An hour? Thirty minutes? [break][break]
Well, she’d cross that bridge when she got there. [break][break]
She walked forward, unperturbed. Jubokko had seen all sorts of entities in her day. This one wasn’t much of a surprise, truly. [break][break]
”Such skill with illusion, yet you’re not a Kitsune or Tanuki,” The antlered woman mused, tapping an index finger against her chin. ”It must mean must be a different type of spirit. Nay, not an ordinary Yokai. Perhaps… a ghost? If so, I must say, you’re a lot less ugly than the ones I have encountered.” [break][break]
A chatty Yokai indeed. After centuries of soul-sucking and feeding off the blood of mortal battlefields, she’d clearly become bored with her usual state of affairs. Being called upon was a treat to her. She was going to make the most of it. [break][break]
And, with such a delightful specimen before her, she had to get some information in. [break][break]
”Now, how did you come to be, spirit? Were you killed and found a way to avert the afterlife? What’s your name?” [break][break]
Jubokko was dilly-dallying. With Kyoko’s mind deep in another part of her shared body’s subconscious, she felt no need to rush with this task.

The oddly serene reaction was to the ghost what a tiny needle was to a balloon. Her spirits deflated, quite literally. Shoulders sagging, she shrank down her usual size. “Sheesh, give away all my secrets, why don’t you?” The ghastly illusion faded away, leaving behind the woman’s usual, sly features. No point in keeping up a disguise now. It was like a magic trick that the audience already knew or a joke the other side had already heard. Instead, she simply donned a snide, slanted smile. “And you’re slightly less dumb than the heroes I’ve seen.” No wonder the stranger refused to run away screaming. Most folks didn’t meet many dead people, but this gal was clearly an exception.
However, the sudden bombardment of questions caught the trickster off-guard. She blinked. Once. Twice. Almost unsure what to even say to that. ...Almost. “Wow, just jumping right into it, huh? At least buy me dinner first.” Still, she didn’t get many chances to talk about herself. “You know, most people don’t ask how or who...” Her smile sharpened to the usual crescent grin. “They just ask why.” While one of them was dilly-dallying, the other didn’t seem to be in much hurry either. If chatter was the name of the game, then she was ready to play~
Suddenly the playful spirit lost her smile. “The night of my death has been carved into my mind with a crimson blade.” She lowered her gaze, reminiscing with a quiet murmur. “A horrible downpour... Flashes of lightning... I’m running through a dark alley, hurrying home after an evening shift...” Her body shifted ever so slightly, making it seem like she was dripping wet. “A filthy hand grabs my arm. The stench of alcohol chokes me. Money. He demands all my money. Something sharp shines in his grasp. I scream and try to pull away... Piercing pain steals my breath... ” Pausing for a brief moment, she clutched her chest near where her heart had once been.
“And everything goes dark.”
With a solemn sigh, Lily continued her gruesome story. “When I came to, I found myself staring at my own cold corpse.” Her body warped again, showing a single wound trickling with crimson. “So many regrets, so much hatred... It drowned me like a tidal wave. All my dreams were washed away. Only one thought remained... Until that man is dead, I will not rest.” Slowly a disturbing grin spread across her features. “I want revenge... I will have my revenge.” Where most smiles showed cheer, this one only showed teeth. “I have long since forgotten my name... But people call me... The Midnight Slasher.” Closing her eyes, she fell silent. ...Aaaaand struggled not to laugh. All of it was complete bull.
