The residential streets of Kichijoji were quiet. Too quiet.
His steps were swallowed in the sounds of tires splashing through puddles as cars whizzed past. A gentle rain drizzled from dark skies filled with low hanging storm clouds—ever a portent of some coming danger if ever there was one.
His electric blue eyes regarded the face of each passerby, dismayed at the lack of caution as they laughed with their friends at some silly internet video or recounted some goofy anecdote. None of them displayed any real measure of caution. Didn't they understand at that the pinnacle of comfort was when life's deadliest trials would come?
Each street lamp he passed beneath displayed his dark clothing. His hood was drawn up over his head, shrouding his face in shadow. He passed like a wraith through the fog of anonymity, unseen and unheard by all that encountered him.
That was how he liked it.
Tajima was looking for it—the danger that lurked just around the bend of every street corner. Evil did not sleep, and danger did not slumber. Let these fools continue on, their every oblivious step haunted by the coming danger.
It would not catch him unawares. It would never lay claim to his soul ever again.
