Downtown Wayport City could be a dangerous place, and this particular evening was no exception. Three men had a dangerous plan, purchase automatic weapons from an illicit dealer, and then make their money back with a robbery. It was a simple plan, effective, but a dangerous one. It was around 7 PM as the sun set, and several businesses were closing their doors for the night. One such business included the downtown 'Bank of Wayport', the target of these scoundrel's.
The three large men would march up to the building's front door, the leader of the pack deciding to knock. "You sure knocking is a good idea boss? Don't we wanna get the drop on em?" The leader of the thugs would nudge his buddy, "Corse we do Butch, just watch me... And Charlie, get ready to put on a show..." One of the bank's teller would open the door and slowly explain "I'm sorry sirs, the bank of Wayport is clo--... Oh my..." The teller's eyes would flash to the weapons being held by the men, before continuing "On second thought, head right in fellas! We've got all the money you could ask for!" the man would start hyper ventilating in fear. The thugs would walk inside the building, the boss of the crew chuckling to himself "Now that's what I like to hear..."
Across town would be a bloody arms dealer in an ally. The man would be slumped against a brick wall with a broken nose, and a business card in his lap. In front of the unconscious body would be Catman, searching through the man's trench coat. The dealer thankfully had a checkbook of sorts, one that detailed a recent transaction. Three men, three light machine guns, that was some serious firepower. If the police were to get involved, they would be torn to shreds, and a SWAT team would take too long. It was up to him to figure out where these guys were headed, and what they were planning on doing.
The obvious thing to do was a bank robbery, and the closest one was the 'Bank of Wayport', only a short walk away. Thankfully, Catman was able to do a bit more than walk, using his grappling gun to ascend to an apartment complex's rooftop. After jumping from building to building, he would eventually be overlooking the bank, just in time to see the group of men marching in.
Charlotte was feeling quite out of her element on the brisk fall evening. Not only was outside of her lab for once, but she was actually dealing with something she'd dreaded for most of her life, finances. Its not her fault that's never needed to worry about a dime of her own money, her parents were just too cushy! Not to mention the fact that her scholarships covered most of her whole education. That's not even mentioning how Aegis doesn't actually pay her a salary. Yet, she did manage to get some kind of money for herself. The only problem being that she didn't actually have a bank account. And as if that wasn't enough, she managed to somehow show up after the bank was already closed.[break][break]
However as she awkwardly stood outside the bank trying to figure out when it'd open, she did overhear something strange. Hearing the brutish and simpleminded voices of the criminals, it was pretty obvious to her that the bank was being robbed. With a bit of a sigh, she knew what she had to do. Its not like she could actually make an account there tomorrow if it gets properly robbed. Following behind the voices of the strange criminals, she had a little trick up her sleeve. She quickly shrunk herself down to a couple inches tall to follow after the criminals. Of course, there was a safe distance between herself and the murderers, since she wasn't exactly trying to get stepped on tonight. [break][break]
Following behind the group of giants, she was by proxy led into the bank. While it was a bit hard to make out at her reduced size, it was pretty apparent that the brutes were heading straight for the vault. Making her way behind a teller's desk, she comfortably grew herself back to normal size. Ensuring that she remained hidden, she tried to think her way out of this situation. This really was one of those encounters where her powers could be more of a hinderance than a help. Its not like she was bulletproof at a more normal size, and she'd break the bank if she grew to a more threatening size. Her best bet was to try and unarm one of the assailants, and try her hand at a proper shootout. She's seen enough movies, she's got this right? Grabbing a hold of a pen from her pocket, she casually threw it to one of the far corners of the lobby. Hopefully the noise would manage to get one of the grunt's attention, and she could get the jump on him away from the others.
The criminal trio would continue making their way inside the bank, holding up one of the tellers at gunpoint. Things seemed to be going their way so far, as one of the thugs would toss a large duffle bag up on the counter. Raising his gun to the male teller from before, he would demand "You, get filling this thing. All the damn cash in this joint. Try anything funny, any police show up, any heroes outside that door, POP! You're head's gettin' blown off." The banker would nod vigorously, and start stuffing cash from behind the stall into the bag.
The leader of the bunch would be bold enough to set down his gun for a second and light a cigarette. "Uh- Boss, you sure that's a good idea?" Bruno would question. "God Damn it-- Can't a man just smoke a fuckin' cigarette in peace? Thank you" The thug would shrug at his bosses' response, keeping his weapon trained on the teller. There robbery would suddenly be put in jeopardy as the boss heard a sound from across the room. It seemed to be that of a pen getting knocked to the ground... Deciding to investigate, he would toss half his smoke on the ground and walk towards the noise. "Calm down fellas, I'm sure it's nothin'."
Meanwhile, outside the building, Catman would find himself on the Bank's roof. He could tell all three armed assailants were in the place, and there was likely a hostage situation. If that was the case, then he would need to clear the room with brutal efficiency. Noticing a ventilation shaft, the vigilante would kick in the metal grate that separated the bank from the outside world. Diving into the shaft, Edward would find himself overlooking the bank's main room. The three men were clearly in view, and they likely knew who he was. Many small time thugs heard about the new up and coming vigilante in Wayport. The big mystery being, what powers he actually had? Making a flashy entrance could get them to panic.
The leader of the thugs would bend over to pick up the pen, inspecting it for a second and shouting back "Ah, it was nothing guys, just a p-," before he could finish his statement, a metal grate would fall from the sealing, and Catman would drop down to the middle of the room! Charlie's eyes would widen "It's Catman!" Butch would respectively ask "Who?" Edward himself would smirk, only responding with "Meow."
In that moment, he would slam a smoke pellet against the ground, creating a large cloud. The first two thugs would begin firing a hail of bullets into the cloud, all in hopes of hitting the man. Thankfully, their vision was terribly obstructed, and they weren't very good shots to begin with. A black shuriken would be launched from the cloud, stabbing into Charlie's shooting hand. "Gah! My hand!" Then, as Butch was reloading, Catman would lunge directly at Charlie with a superman punch. The fist would strike the man's left eye, dazing him for just long enough. His partner's machine gun was now reloaded, and ready to fire again. Bringing the rifle up to the feline vigilante's body, the brute would pull the trigger. Unfortunately for them, Edward would grab Charlie by the shirt, using him as a human shield! "Aaaahh, Butch! Stop damn--" The man would be dead within the first couple shots, and Butch would lower his gun in shock. "Ah Charlie! No!" Catman would simply scowl, and toss Charlie's body at Butch, knocking him over.
In all the confusion, Edward had lost track of the Boss. He wondered what happened there...
As Charlotte took a few deep breaths after tossing her pen, it began to set in just what she was doing. Of course, jumping headlong into danger was something plenty of heroes did, but it didn't really suit her much. Like one of her experiments, she needed everything to be perfect and calculated. She could have faith in her abilities when she could actually use them, but here she would but the entire bank at risk attempting something like that. This was the opposite of one of her procedures, messy, chaotic, and dangerous. Its not like she could predict what these unhinged criminals would do, and she didn't exactly have a safety net to fall back on. "Deep breathes, deep breathes, don't get shot, can't be that hard right?" she mused to herself in an inaudible voice.[break][break]
While she was trying to get a grip, the banging of the newcomer could be heard. While her pen distracted the boss of the group, someone else took the opportunity for himself. The unspoken tension felt in the room was instantly broken when Charlotte heard the name that these ruffians called the new challenger. That wasn't even mentioning the ridiculous meow that he uttered before plunging the entire room in a chaotic smoke. Like, Catman? Really? How trite was that. Was he gonna take these crooks to the litterbox? Some folks around this town really need to work on their branding if they plan to take this seriously. [break][break]
Despite the minor distraction in her mind, she quickly snapped herself back to reality. Of course, this would be her best chance to try and take out these criminals as well. She could hear the gunfire and action taking place elsewhere in the smoke, but it was difficult to make out exactly what Catman was doing. However what she did know was that the bossman went exactly where she wanted him to. As he bent down to inspect the pen, his back was completely turned to the hiding doctor. Acting quickly, she began to rapidly grow herself a bit. While she couldn't exactly go all the way one of her more towering sizes, she could comfortably stand at around twelve feet tall. Emerging from the desk as she grew, she wasted no time grabbing the ruffian and beginning to restrain him. She quickly loosened his grip on the gun and tossed it away, hoping that one of his compatriots wouldn't just grab a hold of it. It wasn't too long before she had him completely grappled, as she held oppressively by the neck. Of course, she made sure not to choke him, but she made sure that he couldn't go anywhere.[break][break]
A resounding smack could be heard throughout the bank, as the boss's body soon hit the ground unconscious. Taking a moment to recompose herself, Charlotte took a deep breath as the smoke faded. Looking down at all of the tellers about half her size, she wanted to make sure no one was injured throughout the process. Before she could focus too much on that though, she saw the mysterious figure of Catman. She approached him as she exuded an energy of relaxation and contentment. "Thanks for the assist. Do you want a treat?" she said with a bit of a self-important tone in her voice as she held two fingers above him, simulating an owner offering something to their pet.
As Catman had knocked the second thug to the ground, he would notice the boss slumped over from across the room. Someone else was there, and it wasn't a little someone by his account. A massive woman appeared to be the one responsible, taking advantage of the man's negligence. She wasn't dressed as a hero, perhaps she was a civilian with a power of some kind? That raised multiple questions, but he couldn't afford to let it interfere with his investigation of the underground arms dealing going on. Aegis was worried about larger threats than that, but he was determined to clean up their mess.
Butch, who was not unconscious would crawl out from under his partner's dead body. Edward would simply walk forward causing the crook to crawl backwards while aiming his gun. "Back damn you!" Edward would smile slightly, watching the man pull the trigger. It would make a soft 'click' sound, indicating it was out of ammunition. He thought as much, seeing the weapon was belt fed, and lacked a belt... Butch would crawl back faster, only to be stopped by Catman who stomp against the man's stomach with his right leg. "Aaarggg..." The guy would moan. "Don't move," The vigilante would mutter.
Edward's eyes would switch to the woman approaching him. She seemed to be teasing him with the treat comment, and must not have realized he was a vigilante. That could be an issue, but maybe this woman could assist him. Ignoring her comment, he would elaborate "I've been hunting down dealers and buyers of an underground weapons racketeering ring. They've been operating across town for the past couple months. Local. No mob or yakuza associations. Know anything?" His gaze would then turn to the injured thug.
Picking up Butch by the collar, Catman would question "That question goes for you too. I expect answers..."
In the aftermath of the whole scuffle, she had to admit that something was rubbing her the wrong way about this guy. While her comment was admittedly pretty cheeky, she at least expected some kind of response to it. Then there was the fact that one of the grunts seemed like he was dead. Of course, accidents happen in the heat of battle, especially with guns involved. She hoped that he'd have some kind of reaction to it though. Her immediate instinct was to try and assess the damages that fight did to the group of criminals, so she casually returned to her admittedly short normal size. Stretching a bit afterwards, she had to wonder why her body felt so strange every time she changed size. It was then that this cat-dressed individual casually lifted the already injured ruffian and began to interrogate him. [break][break]
Looking a bit annoyed, she shot him a glare that could kill. With a frustrated tone in her voice, she said, "Look, have you tried growing a pair of manners? Maybe I'd be more willing to help you if you acknowledged my existence," as she intentionally left her answer to the question vague. While she really didn't know anything, she wanted him to believe that she did. After all, he'd only show proper manners to her if it was convenient to him, or at least she thought. After her little outburst though, she got back to doing what she was born to do. It wasn't long before she was scouring the bank for all of the rescued tellers. She had to treat a few minor injuries for them, but luckily nothing too dangerous. She thanked some sort of providence that none of these people were caught in the crossfire. [break][break]
As she tended to the various tellers, she made sure that she kept at least one eye on Catman. While she could assume that he was acting for some kind of good, she couldn't be completely certain. There was something about him that just screamed untrustworthy to her. Deciding she'd may as well keep up some kind of conversation, she spoke with him from across the room. "I assume I can call you Catman? That's what they called you at least. I'm Dr. Charlotte Leblanc, but you can just call me Doctor," she called out from the side of the unconscious bossman. Like a true goody-two-shoes, she was making sure to treat any immediate injuries that could worsen on a trip to prison. Soon afterwards, she decided that she'd may as well get the cops over here to take them away. After a bit of waiting, she got on the line with an officer from Aegis. "It's Dr. Leblanc, I need a cleanup at Wayport Bank. I got three confirmed criminals, I believe one of them is dead," she bluntly said to the operative. [break][break]
While this guy gave her all the wrong signals, she wasn't one to let a favor go unrepaid. Looking directly to the mysterious vigilante, Charlotte sighed to herself. She then dejectedly explained, "Hey whiskers, I just called an Aegis cleanup over here. I'm just gonna guess that you don't want them seeing your face, so you should probably bounce. If you choose not to, that's not exactly my fault." Of course, this seemed completely off protocol, but when was Charlotte one to do as other people told her?
The vigilante would roll his eyes as the woman thought she was being ignored entirely. "I'm not ignoring your existence, that question was directed at you... If I was ignoring you, then I wouldn't have spoken at all..." Edward saw crime fighting as a job more than a hobby. It was something that required seriousness and tact. From his guess, this woman looked at hero work as a day job, and not the war on crime it actually was...
He would almost chuckle at her assertion of him needing manners. That was perhaps the least important thing to him, as all he needed was information... Deciding to find it himself, he would walk back over to Butch, and begin rummaging through the man's pockets. The thug would simply be begging "Take whatever you want, just don't kill me!" eventually, he would find an envelop tucked away in the crook's coat. It didn't seem to contain drugs or money, but an actual letter. Taking the piece of paper, Catman would stuff it into an empty container on his utility belt.
Meanwhile, the doctor would be asking about his name. Edward would give a simple nod, asserting "I am Catman. Well met Doctor, I appreciate your assistance..." His heart rate would increase as she called an Aegis clean up crew, but would remain calm on the outside. They were the organization who denied him for having no powers, he didn't even have a chance. Charlotte had also seemed to realize he was no hero, and even warned him that they were on their way.
"Heh, even if Aegis did see me, they would just call me an amature and tell me to beat it. Maybe they would try to arrest me, but that wouldn't go well for them..." Edward would grab the grappling gun at his side, preparing for a quick escape.
Charlotte found herself a bit too occupied with the various tellers to notice what Catman had taken from Butch. While she wouldn't outright stop him from taking it, she'd at least appreciate being in the loop about this whole thing. In reality though, this wasn't really any of her business. She helped out because she was in the neighborhood, but it seemed like this Cat gentleman had much more beef he wanted to take up with these guys. Giving him a bit of a courteous smile as she looked to him, she said, "It's been a pleasure Catman. If you ever find yourself too banged up from these little excursions, you know who to call." She then proceeded to dig through her pockets, and quickly toss a business card at him. Among other things, it contained her name, alter ego and phone number. [break][break]
Shortly after his remark about Aegis arresting him, she heard the approaching vehicles of the agency. Taking a deep breath, she quickly scanned the room to make sure that both criminals were in place. By the time that she looked back towards Catman, he had vanished. Letting out a bit of a sigh, she muttered, "Typical." Of course, she couldn't dwell much on her feline ally, as she had to go through all the proper red tape for this situation. She quickly turned over the two crooks to Aegis agents, making sure that they were both restrained and safely escorted out of the bank. In her explanation, she made sure to exclude the part about Catman, as she wasn't exactly trying to put a target on his back. She knew Aegis, and she knew that they wouldn't care that he saved all these people.[break][break]
After finally leaving the bank, Charlotte couldn't help but realize just how late it was. "Guess sleep schedules are overrated anyway..." she said to herself dejectedly, as she figured she'd may as well just go back to her lab anyway. Hopefully someday soon she could actually make a bank account. Maybe next time the bank would get robbed in the process.
